Common Comma Catastrophes

Here are some common comma mistakes to avoid.

  1. Setting off the subject from the predicate.
  2. Jennifer and I, went to the store.

  3. Adding only one comma of a pair.
  4. The doctor, who was a gentleman left the room while I disrobed.

  5. Not setting off non-essential clauses.
  6. Doctor Who which is a long-running British T.V. series is undergoing a leadership change.

  7. Setting off essential clauses.
  8. The house, on the corner of 14th and Main, is on fire.

  9. Using a comma to join sentences.
  10. We went to the store, I bought a cat and two cantaloupes.

  11. Not using a comma before an independent clause.
  12. The mayor doesn’t get along with the council and the county chairman is a jerk.

  13. Not using commas between items in a list or series.
  14. My favorite books are Wicked Rebecca and The Stranger.

  15. Not using commas to separate place names.
  16. I was born in Monkey’s Eyebrow Arizona.

  17. Not inserting a comma after a date or year.
  18. On June 6, 1966 I got married.

  19. Not setting off the noun of direct address.
  20. John don’t forget to zip your pants.
